THE CORRUPTION OF ANTI CORRUPTION

 Viewpoint illustration
“Selective prosecution of political opponents undermines the legitimacy of anti-corruption reform efforts. It is the most cynical abuse of power…”
GRACEY
The arraignment of Senate President Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Bureau before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Tuesday is without doubt one of the most dramatic political events of the past week. The case, however it is resolved, will be remembered not just for what it says but also for what it fails to say, or rather its symbolism regarding the anti-corruption posture of the Buhari administration.
In order to comment fairly, this writer reveals upfront that he has never met Saraki, nor is he, as the readers of this column will recall, sympathetic to the shabby manner in which he emerged in his current position. But if that antecedent provoked turbulent ruminations, the current attempt to nail or get at him, through a so-called anti-corruption vehicle is even more rickety and ominous. As Emeritus Professor at the Boston Law School, Elizabeth Spahn, quoted above, informs, very few things are as corrosive of reform efforts as the targeting of political opponents through selective prosecution. To be sure, the criminalisation of opposition and dissent in our national life bring forward anxious reminiscences: Chief Obafemi Awolowo at the treasonable felony trial, Ken Saro-Wiwa, appearing before a military tribunal whose predetermined brief was to sentence him to death and several others. We can recall too in passing that Chief Bola Tinubu was incompetently arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal in 2011, with the barely disguised intention of settling scores with a star opposition leader. In other words, political authorities have historically employed the legal system to indict those who fall out with them.

Mob pelts Saraki, others with stones at Eid prayer

Senate President Bukola SarakiANGRY mob on Thursday hurled water sachets and stones at a tent under which the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some other dignitaries sat, at the Eid-el-Kabir prayer ground in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.
Amid shouts of “ole” “ole” (thief! thief!), the mob, made up mainly of youths and workers in the state, reportedly defied security operatives at the Eid-el-Kabir prayer and threw objects at the tent.
Saraki was reportedly smuggled out of the area by security operatives.
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Sulu Gambari, who arrived at the venue at 10 am, five minutes after Saraki, reportedly met the mob hurling sachets of pure water and stones at dignitaries including the Senate President.

The tent also accommodated the Emir; the Chief Imam, Alhaji Muhammad Bashir; the state House of Assembly speaker, Ali Ahmad; and a former Acting national Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, and now a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, among others.
One of our correspondents reports that the state-owned radio station, Radio Kwara, which had been transmitting the event live at a point, discontinued its broadcast.

CCT vs SARAKI: I have been through it – Tinubu

LAGOS—APPARENTLY reacting to the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday said the present administration cannot overlook certain things in its fight against corruption.

Meantime, Tinubu has called on Nigerians to often put God and the nation first in their daily activities, saying “What is missing in Nigeria is lack of patriotism, dedication to God and to our people.
Tinubu, speaking after activities for the Eid-il-Kabir celebration at Dodan Barracks, praying ground, said that the ongoing anti-corruption war embarked upon by President Muhammadu Buhari will further strengthen the country’s institutions and fast track development.
This came 48 hours after Saraki appeared before the CCT in Abuja on September 22nd, 2015, claiming that he was not guilty of the charges leveled against him by the tribunal.
